‘Six Angry Girls’ cover design

I was approached by art director Mallory Grigg to lend my illustration style of diverse characters with lots of attitude for the cover of the YA novel Six Angry Girls by Adrienne Kisner.
I loved this project because I had the opportunity to portray a diverse group of characters with different skin tones, gender expressions, and body types, as well as incorporate details like leg hair and acne. This is probably one of the only YA books on the shelf that showcases those kinds of details! This cover was a big hit, with many readers sharing that they picked the book up for the cover alone.
Mallory requested sketches that explored compositions featuring one or two characters, as well as all 6 of the ensemble together, which is the direction we went with.
I incorporated analog media as a starting point for the lettering and illustration and refined and colored digitally.
